Rob Huff delivered a masterclass in overtaking during Saturday’s FIA WTCC Race of Germany at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

A crash at 220kph in Free Practice caused considerable damage to his Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team Civic WTCC, which necessitated an engine change and put the 2012 champion to the back of the grid for the Opening Race.

Despite the penalty, Huff charged through the field to place fourth at the chequered flag, a result he emulated in the Main Race, albeit from fifth on the grid.

“I’m really pleased with my drive in the Opening Race to come through from the back of the grid to fourth place,” said Huff, a double winner in this year’s WTCC. “I thought a podium was possible in the main race because we were starting fourth, and the pace of the Honda in the twisty sections – especially between Karussel and the start of the long straight at Döttinger Höhe was excellent. But we just didn’t have the straightline speed to be able to pass the cars around us, so there wasn’t an opportunity to go by.”

Afterwards, Huff praised his factory Honda team mechanics for getting his weekend back on track following his Thursday crash. “The boys did a phenomenal job to repair the car,” said Huff.

Huff was also competing in the ADAC 24h-Rennen at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. However, he had only completed one stint in the Mercedes he was driving when a propshaft failure caused the car’s retirement during the night.
